Making the Privet Hawk Caterpillar Transformation Video

Making this video was fun but quite a challenge. I set myself quite ambitious goals in creating this video especially without the help of a intervalometer. Instead I just recorded the footage which made me end up with these huge files I had to speed up by thousands of percent, although looking back on it there are a few other ways I could have made this work with the same outcome.

My Nan and Pop are always keeping things they find in their garden for me to identify. It has been a long time since I have seen a Privet Hawk Moth caterpillar and as soon as they sent me the photo I had a plan for a video.

As you can see in the photo they sent me in the video the caterpillar is much more green on its back, a lot of caterpillars go through this colour change just before their final moult and in the Privet Hawk Moth the back turns this sort of brownish colour.

It would have been nice to have the moth hatch out in the same video but it won't hatch till spring now so you'll just have to wait for part two.
